A group of West Concord youngsters came to the city library last week to learn about snowplow safety, have some treats and watch a movie.

The library sponsored the event on Thursday to give the youngsters something else to occupy their time during the winter break.

City Maintenance Supervisor Keith Clammer was on hand to show several videos and also to encourage the children to stay away from the snowplows when they are clearing the streets, not to build forts or go sliding near the street and wear bright colored clothing and wave so the plow drivers can see them.

After the program inside, the children got to go outside and see the equipment the city uses to clear snow from streets and sidewalks and, if they wanted, to climb into the driver's seat of West Concord's new snowplow.

The new white snowplow is actually a 15-year-old refurbished one that the city purchased in 2017. It replaces, Clammer said, a vehicle that was about 30 years old.

Clammer said he has been doing the presentation for several years and has seen positive results.

"It's a win-win situation," he said. "The kids are moving the forts away from the curb."

Not only are they learning how to safely act around the plows, the kids are getting to know the drivers and the drivers the kids.

Back inside after taking a close look at the equipment, the youngsters were treated to root beer floats and popcorn as they settled in to watch the movie, "Home Alone."
