The New Year has proved to be difficult for Triton High School student Hunter Moen.

After experiencing leg pain, the ninth-grader was diagnosed in January with osteosarcoma bone cancer. He immediately began chemotherapy but after several rounds of the treatment a bone scan showed that the tumor in his leg had grown and also spread to both of his lungs. His leg was amputated on April 5.

To help the family with expenses arising from Hunter's illness and surgery, a Helping Hunter benefit event is scheduled from 4 to 9 p.m. on Saturday, May 19, at the Dodge Center American Legion, 401 Highway St.

The evening will feature a pulled pork dinner, silent auction and live auction.

The dinner will cost $12 for adults and $6 for kids.

The silent auction will run from 4 to 8:30 p.m. and the live auction will start at 7 p.m.

Hunter was released from the hospital on April 12 but soon began another round of chemotherapy. Active in athletics at Triton, he remains committed to his team as he put in an appearance at the April 30 Triton baseball game, only hours after leaving a chemotherapy treatment at the hospital.

He is continuing to have chemotherapy for the cancer that has spread to his lungs.

Anyone who would like to donate to the silent auction or other auction items should contact Stacey Sackett at 507-251-2727 or Shannon Kruckeberg at 507-319-6845. Individuals wishing to help may also make a monetary donation at the Citizens State Bank in Mantorville, Dodge Center or Hayfield to "Helping Hunter."
