1/10/2018 3:49:00 PM Razorbacks start New Year
with 58-21 win over Triton
By Mary Nelson
The Westfield Razorback wrestling team opened 2018 with a trip to Dodge Center for a dual against the Triton Cobras.
The Cobras appear to be going through what a lot of small town wrestling teams are going through today - low participation numbers. When you add injuries to that, it's hard to compete as a team.
The Cobras forfeited the first three weights to Keegan Bronson (106), Cody Nirk (113), and Ethan Arett (120). Tyler Archer (126) was down 2-1 after the first period against Colby Dobbs but a reversal by Dobbs to start the second period proved crucial for Archer as he ended up losing his match by a fall in 2:53.
Cole Christianson (132) pinned Sean Strom in 1:19 to put the Razorbacks up 24-6. Joe Pirkl received a forfeit at 138.
Joey Meyer (145) was down 10-1 after the first period against Kyle Michell. Meyer dominated the second period earning three points for a near fall. The two went back and forth with reversals in the third period but in the end, Michell would win by a fall in 5:27.
Payton Simon (152) dominated his match against Kaleb Strom leading 9-1 after two periods. Strom put up a fight in the third period scoring four points with a reversal and a takedown but Simon held on to win by a 13-5 major decision.
Seth Peterson received a forfeit at 160. Colton Krell (170) won by a fall in 3:25 against Trey Theobald. Isaac Fernandez (182) lost to Mason Barker by a fall in 3:59.
Morgen Moreno (195) and Hunter Jennings wrestled a good match. Jennings' coaches reminded him to not tie up with Moreno and that worked in his favor. The first period was scoreless. Moreno started down in the second period. He earned a penalty point and a point for an escape to put him ahead 2-0 going into the third period. Moreno would lose that lead and the match after Jennings went on to score 8 points.
Dylan Nirk (220) and Max Lamoree got down to business right away shooting and blocking shots but the match was cut short in the first period after Lamoree looked to have reinjured his knee.
Mitchell Oswald received a forfeit at heavyweight.
