The Hayfield Lady Vikes basketball team picked up three wins over the past week and now sit with a 20-4 record with just a few regular season games left to play.
On Thursday, February 8 Hayfield traveled to the downtown St. Paul Salvation Army to take on Christ's Household of Faith (CHOF). Hayfield's defense set the tone early and Maggie Streightiff made her first two three point shot attempts to give Hayfield an early cushion. The Lady Vikes kept a fast pace all first half as they went into the locker room with a 40-21 lead. The second half saw much of the same as Hayfield's lead grew as big as 33 points. In the end, the Lady Vikes left with a comfortable 64-44 victory. Hayfield scoring: Elecia Brown 16, Carrie Rutledge 13, Maggie Streightiff 12, Kate Kruger 9, Brooke Bungum 6, Emma Holst 3, Caitlyn Severson 2, Abby Stasko 2, and Lillie O'Connor 1.
The next day saw the Triton Cobras travel ten miles south down highway 56 to Hayfield for an HVL Blue contest. After a back and forth start that saw the score tied 7-7 a few minutes in, the Lady Vikes caught fire from behind the 3-point line. At one point the Lady Vikes made six three pointers in a row and ended with thirteen first half three pointers as Hayfield went into the locker room up 57-27. The second half was much slower paced and Hayfield was able to cruise to a 77-49 victory. On Monday, February 12 the Awesome Blossoms of Blooming Prairie came to town as Hayfield celebrated Senior Night. The Lady Vikes have five seniors playing in their final season. They are Carrie Rutledge, Kate Kruger, Olivia Matti, Caitlyn Severson, and Maggie Streightiff. Hayfield's full court pressure defense led to 18 Blossom turnovers in the first half, and Emma Holst connected on five first half 3-pointers, as Hayfield rolled out to a 42-22 halftime lead. Hayfield was able to extend their lead to 35 points in the second half and running time made the time quickly pass. In the end, Hayfield was victorious 75-45. Hayfield has two regular season games left. On Tuesday, February 13 the Vikings travel to Kenyon-Wanamingo High School. On Friday, Hayfield takes the bus ride to Goodhue for an HVL Blue Showdown.
The winner of the Friday game will win the HVL Blue title and host the HVL Championship game on Monday, February 19 vs. Stewartville.
