Terrorism is cunning
The events in Charlottesville, Virginia demonstrate how easily terrorism can creep into a nation's daily life. It is a lesson we need to take to heart and work to understand.
While I agree that the President should have directed his condemnation against the White Supremacists and Nazi groups responsible for the gathering and attendant violence, we all need to watch out for groups stirring us to anger over foolishness, lest we find ourselves in the same situations as so many people of the Middle East.
In the present case, outside groups decided they should have the right to decide for the city of Charlottesville what statues should be displayed there, despite the fact that the citizens of Charlottesville, through their elected officials, had said they wanted the statue taken down. This case involved groups on the right politically.
In other cases, outside groups on the left have decided they should have the right to decide in other places that local citizens should not be able, through their elected officials, to make the decision to have religious symbols displayed in parks, cemeteries or during celebrations.
