Publisher's Column Tell me again why I wanted a computer

As I was working on this page and going through email Sunday, I saw one of the conservative websites offering a political cartoon related to Scott Pruitt's departure from the EPA and decided to take a look, and it turned out to be a serious mistake. As I was perusing the site, a ransomeware message popped up with the warning that malware had been installed on my computer and giving a number to call to learn how I could get back control of my computer. I immediately unplugged the computer and am waiting for technical help before plugging it back in.

Fortunately, our server apparently was not infected and our other computers seem to be working normally, so all that is lost so far is what work I had done Sunday and what is stored on the computer.

Like many things in our modern lives, computers are both a blessing and a curse. You really can't be assured anything on a computer is secure, as we learned a few weeks back when a competitor sneaked into our production files. Even federal and state government agencies with top flight security systems get broken into. There is no such thing as absolute security.

Another curse is passwords - you're supposed to remember them but not to write them down. If you have faulty memory after you are manipulating a couple dozen and making sure each is unique, you can purchase (unsecure) software to keep track of them for you - and anyone else who succeeds in breaking into the software.

Let's see, there must be a blessing, too? Oh, yes, they save paper, at least I heard that they do. Well, there is social media -you don't have to write letters and pay postage, everyone who ever made contact with anyone you ever met is probably on your Friend list and sending you photos, family news and demands that you support their political candidate...

But there must be a blessing?!?
